Cooperation, coordination with gEDA?

Posted by Sam Smarties at January 30. 2008

I would very much like to see that you coordinate your effort with, or cooperate with the gEDA project. It is a long-running project to create a free EDA suite: http://www.geda.seul.org/

We have been looking at gEDA and Kicad (another free EDA suite under development) as possible alternatives or complements to Eagle and both are really attractive from the standpoint of being open source and community-developed as well as solidly functional.

For the immediate future though, we will probably stay with Eagle as the EDA tool of choice, at least until the interface between the all-Fritzing front-end and the back-end is a little more mature.  Some of the features of Eagle make it a good choice for developing the export tools - particularly the well-documented Eagle scripting and user language programming languages.  Once we have worked out those issues though, we'll take another look at the EDA options.

Do you know anyone over at the gEDA project who would be good to talk to about this?

Hello there 'fritzers',

Because im dutch translator and kicad tester/developer i would like you guys to look at the crossplatform possiblity of kicad in comparance with gEDA. Because gEDA is mostly developed for the UNIX like platforms its not as easy build as KiCad Suite. Also KiCad has good documentation ( OpenOffice / PDF ), good file formats ( plain ascii ) with specifictations. And als Python Bindings implentent ( not fully functional but working ). Because KiCad is written in C++ / Python / Boost C++ Libraries / wxWidgets Crossplatform toolkit. Its highly portable and also compilable with Visual Studio.

I hope you guys will look after it because we can help from both sides.

Please contact the Author of www.kicad-eda.org (Jean-Pierre) or Me <jerkejacobs[at]gmail[dot]com>

Greets,

Jerry Jacobs

* Dutch KiCad Developer
